A Very Special JBS Birthday!

It's an extra special day here at JBS because we are celebrating our very own Jenni Bowlin's birthday! All day long, the design team will be posting birthday wishes here on the blog to honor our fearless leader. So check back often for inspiring cards and tags from the team and feel free to leave your own birthday greetings for Jenni here as well!

I'm kicking off the party with the first card, featuring the iconic JBS butterfly. I've loved every supply that's featured this beautifully intricate image and thought it would be the perfect way to bring a bit of spring into Jenni's birthday greetings.

Supplies: Modern Mercantile papers (Miscellany, Novelties, Patchwork); JBS Butterfly stamp,JBS for Ranger inks (Stick Candy,  Soap Powder); Blue Label Stickers, Hodge Podge Stickers (Magpie)

Happy Birthday, Jenni! We love you!

Back to School: Math

Though math has never been my strongest subject, I've always has a fascination with numbers. I loved the concrete, definitive answer that results when an equation is solved correctly. Of course, in my case, that was a fairly rare occurrence, but there was no better feeling when it did!

Inspired all things mathematics, I put together the layout below, challenging myself to incorporate the element of numbers as many times as possible.  Though many numerical items appear, I focused on the number "two" for the obvious reason that the subject of the page is me and my husband:
"Two" by Lisa Dickinson
It was fun sorting through my stash to find any supplies that might represent the idea of "two." And when I finished the page, I had incorporated seventeen different numerical elements. (Can you find them all?)

There are so many JBS supplies that work perfectly for this theme! Using the Magpie papers as my base, I added lots of other "twos' in a variety of forms and materials. I even found quotes to add as journaling that incorporate the word two

In addition to the stuff I used on my page, here are some of my other favorite JBS products that feature numbers:

Having math serve as an inspiration source for a scrapbook page might seem a bit odd, but when all the elements of a layout design come together perfectly, it's much like solving an equation. And who isn't inspired by that?

JBS Summer Games: Sailing

Is it possible to find scrapping inspiration in a sport that involves boats racing in the water? Of course! Whether it's the colorful graphic designs on the sails, the clean lines and shapes, or the water itself, sailing provides many ideas that can translate to your page!

I chose to use the simple shape of the sails as a main design element on my layout. Triangles are popular right now and super easy to create. First, I just used my trusty square punch to create several squares of patterned paper:

Then, using a ruler and exacto knife,  I cut each square on the diagonal to form a triangle:
I lined up various triangles (cut from Wren and Magpie papers) in the upper left corner of my page, using them as arrows to direct the eye though the page:
"Here We Go" by Lisa Dickinson
I stitched down the center line of the triangle rows with my sewing machine and then gently bent up the corners to add a little bit of dimension:
To keep with the sailing theme, I lightly splattered some watered-down Spice Tin ink around the page. I like the casual abstractness it adds to the design and it helps to tone down the linear feel of all the straight lines.

My title is die-cut from the Blueprint paper and combined with some of the new Grey Skinny Alpha stickers (which should be in stores soon!)

So how can you be inspired by sailing? We'd love to see the results! Post your entries on the JBS Summer Games thread to be eligible for medal contention! Each entry must be created from a JBS Mercantile Kit(s) or include at least three different JBS products. Entries close at midnight CST on September 2nd.  Winners will be randomly drawn and announced on September 3rd.

Summer CHA & another layout

Did you guys see Magpie?

What about the stencil papers?

And these??

I love these things! The papers have such amazing colors and the stencils and stamp papers are just so different and fun. I was excited to get to use them on another page for CHA.

And they all work together!

I hope you have enjoyed this week's CHA coverage! Have a great weekend!

Circles, Doilies, & Stamps

The JBS Mercantile Exclusive Medallion Stamp is one of my very favorite JBS stamps. It can be cut apart to make a circle border or to cut the central flower out and it's just the perfect size, measuring three inches in diameter. On the layout I'm sharing with you today, I stamped it on top of small, pastel doilies. It goes perfectly with doilies I must say! I love it! I think part of it is the texture pattern inside the stamp works so well with the texture on the border of the doily. And it's on sale for $2.00 until the 5th :)

I used a 3 1/2" circle punch on several patterns of JBS Magpie Collection paper and arranged them in a grid with the stamped doilies. I made this also for our Rubix Cube grid challenge going on right now on the message board ($25.00 Mercantile gift card up for grabs, ladies!). I added my photos then layered smaller circles of stickers, metal rimmed tags, and circle and seal punches.

I used photos I had on hand, already printed, so I tried to make them work into the grid sized as they were. I let the larger photo (4x6) take up almost two circles and centered the two smaller photos (4x3, 2 1/8 x 2 7/8) on a single circle. I like that with everything being the same in terms of the circles that I've got the variation in photo sizes - worked out well I think. Finally I typed my journaling on the computer in landscape, printed it out, and ran it down the length of the sides of the pages.

This is an easy design, simple to re-create (use your die cutting machine for the circles if you don't have a super giga circle punch), and oh so much fun to embellish all those circles! And if you like it enough to be inspired by it, lets see what you come up with and share it here on the Rubix Cube Results page!

MOM by Waleska

Here is a stamping treat from Waleska who writes, "I used some of my favorite stamps and techniques here. I stamped the seal with Lemon Drop paint dabber (love the deep color and texture you get stamping with paint), the butterfly with Cough Syrup ink (on a vintage card) and the Days of the Week stamp (which a switched a bit to spell mom :)) with Speckled Egg."

Thanks for the inspiration Waleska!

Positive & Negative

One of the best things to happen to my creativity was the debut of the Jenni Bowlin Studio shapes in the Silhouette Store. I'm finding all kinds of ways to introduce these classic JBS icons into my projects. And because you can customize the size of die-cut you need, these shapes are perfect on just about everything!

I've also discovered that both the positive and negative images that result from the die-cut are versatile page elements.  On this card, I've used the Whimsy Silhouette, cut from the Magpie paper, Compile.
"Dream"  •   card by Lisa Dickinson

I love the image of that little girl hanging tight to a star! Paired with a chipboard button, a bit of seam binding, and a sentiment stamped with the JBS alphabet, it makes a quick and easy card.

I was then left with the portion of patterned paper from which the image had been cut. I backed it with a bit of kraft cardstock and used it on this page:

I added some of the Quilted Stickers from Magpie and a title also cut on my Silhouette. (The title is my own design - you can download an .svg file for cutting by clicking right here!)

I'd love to see what you can do with the JBS Silhouette images! If you create something, please share it with us in the Mercantile Gallery!

A Hybrid Sampler

I just love samplers ... needlework samplers ... quilted samplers ... samplers of any kind!  So when I saw Jenni's Circle Home Mixed Media Kit, it reminded me of a sampler, and inspired me to create something similar for my scrapbook:

I used the digital Frame Rub-on Kit to create the basic framework for the sampler.

It's simple to do in any word processing program.  I just dragged the digital seal image onto a document,  copied, resized, and organized the images to get  the look I wanted.  I printed the arrangement onto a printable canvas.  Each seal became a home for a photo or embellishment.

The canvas was mounted on Inkwell paper with only a tiny border showing and then mounted on a 12x12 sheet of Nest from the Magpie collection.  This background paper works so nicely with the canvas!

Doesn't this sound like fun?!  Try creating your own framework of frames digitally, print them out, and  decorate and embellish!

Hodge Podge Stickers Memo, Magpie, Souvenier

Guest Star Paige Evans!

Today we have an awesomely talented and creative guest to share her creations with our latest release, Magpie.  A big JBS welcome to Paige Evans!

On this first one she's made an amazing concentric border around her page using a medallion punch trimmed in half mixed with some tab stickers.  This is indeed an all boy page for her sweet boy with all the trucks and bikes and the bulldog with oh so much character.

This layout is simply amazing to me.  What a creative use of the alphabet stamp.  And how much patience did it take to create?  But I think the coloring must have been great fun too.

Notice how she even pop dotted a few of the words.  Details details!

And here is one more fun mix of her little guy at 17 months.  Love the line of button stickers down the center and the descriptive adjectives.  Thanks for the inspiration Paige!

Here is a little more about Paige Evans and you can read even more on her blog.

My very first job when I was 16 years old (almost 11 years ago now - time flies!) was at a local scrapbooking store in Redmond, WA called Yesterdays. I've been hooked to scrapping ever since! Sometimes I think about what my life would be like now if I hadn't walked in and asked for an application (which they didn't have, they just took my phone number!) because so much of my life has revolved around scrapbooking since then... I work full-time from home for Northridge Publishing - they make the magazines Scrapbook Trends , CARDS , Simply Handmade, Bead Trends , Cricut, and Create: Idea Books. Aside from scrapbooking, I love spending time with my husband of five years, Chris, playing with our one-and-a-half year old son Fox, getting ready for our daughter to join our family in July, and entertaining our menagerie which consists of a dog, cat, rabbit, and chinchilla. I love to create on a daily basis and enjoy dabbling in everything from fine arts (painting, drawing, printmaking, etc.), to bookbinding, photography, graphic design, and more!
